Manila Depot Museum

This local area museum, which opened in 2001, is housed in the old Manila train depot, which was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 as an amendment to the "Historic Railroad Depots of Arkansas." An example of a traditional board-and-batten depot, it was built in 1910 after fire destroyed the original. The museum houses military exhibits from area veterans-- from World War I to Operation Iraqi Freedom, as well as exhibits showing what the depot looked like in its heyday, including a telegraph, desk and chair, ticket cabinet, and pot bellied stove. A second building, acquired in 2014, includes exhibits and artifacts that tell the stories of early life in Manila, including sections related to the New Madrid Earthquake, the Big Lake National Wildlife Refuge, a mercantile/dry goods store, a tack/tool shop, the cotton industry, and a 1930s era kitchen, bedroom, and laundry area. The museum buildings are open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. or by appointment.
